Second only to 'Why Box Man?', I believe this is the question I get asked the most about Box Man Industries. It is a quite ambitious declaration that, to me, feels more like a superhero's catchphrase than the motto of a research and design based engineering project. So why is it plastered on every picture, video, and product that originates from it?
I can't remember the specific date the phrase was first exclaimed to me, but I remember it was early on in the history of the project. Before Box Man Industries, it was just known as Box Man, or more officially The Box Man Project. It wasn't until 2023 that the brand was pushed into the current industrialized professionalism that it operates under now. Nonetheless, I believe it was sometime in 2022, I was in the car with my dad, who was driving us to an occasion I have long since forgotten. I was discussing, or rather relentlessly jabbering, about the implications of boxes in certain projects. This was around the time that I was paranoid about not using cardboard in anything I did for Box Man because I believed the vanity of such a unique aspect would wear off and the name would instantly become meaningless. Since this time, I have learned that I should not force the usage of 'boxes' in the projects, and that it was even more effective when integrated naturally.
Amidst my complex and most probably unbearable ramblings, my father sat and soaked in every detail of my conversation. I don't remember the exact context in which he said it, but I probably mentioned something about needing a motto, and he responded with a legendary phrase.
"Changing the World, One Box at a Time," he said. We sat in silence for a second as I pondered the perfection of his poise. I told him it was genius, and since then, his words have been immortalized in everything that comes out of Box Man Industries.
Since that moment, just about every aspect of Box Man Industries has changed, but not so much as "The World". The motto has stayed, however, and even though it is unlikely the project will ever change the world, I keep the saying for all that it represents. Firstly it represents the importance of paternal support. Just eight words showing that he cared about the project undoubtedly changed it forever. Imagine what a lifetime of true support could mean for the future of our current children.
Secondly, it represents the importance of change in engineering. Too many people resist change in their societies, and while tradition, history, and legacy should never be sabotaged for change in our world, if something like engineering, which can drastically change the world for the better if manipulated honestly and selflessly, is able to be improved upon, it should happen. Engineering in general, not just in the mechanical sense, is the reason we have many of the privileges that have blessed us and our posterity.
Lastly, the motto represents how, sometimes, the most simple of concepts can alter the paradigms of humanity. Many of the greatest inventions in our history originated from such a simple basis. Great, revolutionary minds can take the most basic idea, goal, or ambition and change the world. I don't believe my mind is either of those things, but I do believe it is important to respect the importance of even the most menial of aspects of our lives. The mere fact that a box of all things led me here is grand enough for me to live by it.
That is why we are Box Man Industries, Changing the World, One Box at a Time.
